Owner Jeff Martin actually got into building homes by accident. He started out helping a friend work on a new home because they were out of room and needed a larger house. His friend’s family actually lived with Martin the last 4-5 months of the project, because they had sold their old house before the new one was completed. “We’d work on the house a few nights a week and on weekends,” says Martin. “I simply fell in love with the building process and helping friends.” After helping his friends, Jeff and his wife, Margaret, decided to build a new home of their own. Two years after the completion of that home, they decided to do it all over again. Despite mild objections from Margaret, they started building and actually never moved into that new home. As it turns out, someone else wanted to buy it. Thus, Primrose Homes Inc. was created. So what makes Primrose special? For one, you’ll find a passion within their employees that you just won’t find anywhere else. At Primrose, it is more than just pride; they actually enjoy making people happy. He is planning the region’s first green certified spec home to be certified as a “Gold” green home by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). In fact, the Primrose home we are featuring in this issue is going to be very similar to the proposed green home. “To make a certified green home and have it rated Gold by the NAHB is something to be proud of,” says Martin. You might be asking yourself, what does it take to qualify for a certified-Gold green home? Well, you are going to learn that in upcoming issues, as Designing HOME Lifestyles Magazine chronicles the evolution of this exciting new home, which will be the first of its kind in the Pittsburgh region. To build a home at this level takes an intense training, education, and knowledge. The key to a successful green home is incorporating environmental considerations and resource efficiency into every step of the building process. The objective is to minimize overall environmental impact. To aim for a certification of this level, you cannot fail in any aspect of the entire development. If one category is not up to standards, the entire project will not receive the Gold certification. “It is all or nothing when you’re building a home like this,” says Martin. “So you better be sure that you know exactly what you are doing.” This is an exciting time for Primrose Homes, which is coming off yet another record year. It is not surprising that they are a leading authority on green building.
