It’s five o’clock, you’ve just gotten out of work, and thousands of people are rushing to their cars and buses, ready to make the long commute home. You, however, decide to stay downtown and relax with friends over a couple drinks.
There’s only one question: where? You’ve already done the corner bar thing. And that hotel restaurant just isn’t exciting anymore. How about a sophisticated yet casual grille with great food, drink, and atmosphere? Or maybe something with a little Latin flavor that puts you in a festive, Caribbean state of mind? Better yet, how about both?
Sonoma Grille and Seviche await your arrival....
Right in the heart of Pittsburgh’s cultural district on Penn Avenue, you can find two of the region’s most unique dining locales: Seviche and Sonoma Grille.
Each of these distinctive eateries offers a lot more than you’ll find at the old standby, and each is the brain child of executive chef and owner Yves Carreau.

“I have lived in Pittsburgh for over 25 years,” says Carreau, who was born and raised in Lyon, France. “I love the transformation that has taken place in the dining scene. Diners are hungry for new and different cuisines. Fresh local wholesome ingredients are a must, bold flavors are in, and wine has become an integral part of each meal. These are tenets we live by every day at Sonoma and Seviche. ”
Carreau’s aptly named Sonoma Grille at 947 Penn Avenue is a California-inspired restaurant featuring delicious tapas and over l00 award winning wines by the glass. The minute you walk inside, you feel like you’ve traveled to the warm, sun-drenched wind country of California’s Sonoma Valley. It’s a sophisticated, yet casual restaurant with an airy dining room, hip diners, and vivid colors.
“Sonoma is my baby,” says Carreau. “It’s my first true concept, and I am very grateful for the recognition it has garnered.”
Just down the street at 930 Penn Avenue, Seviche is a nuevo Latino tapas restaurant and bar that transports you to the sunny shores of Miami’s South Beach. Named after a popular Latin American appetizer consisting of citrus-marinated raw fish, Seviche gives you a totally different dining experience with the same quality and satisfaction you’ll get at Sonoma.
“With Seviche I just wanted to have fun,” says Carreau. “I wanted to create a place that would make people say, ‘Wow! Am I still in Pittsburgh?’”
Sonoma Grille’s fare is a melting pot of international cuisine, wrapped with a California twist. Each menu item features a suggested wine pairing, sure to create a match made in heaven. Here, organic salmon becomes a menu masterpiece, not to be outshined by the perfectly seared Ahi tuna or horseradish-crusted Mahi-Mahi. Fresh, lively vegetables are paired with juicy, seasoned meats and poultry to take your breath away. And don’t forget their homemade ice cream creations.
Seviche features seven different preparations of its namesake dish, each made with only the freshest fish available. Here, authentic Latin American recipes are fused with modern ingredients and international influences to provide a refreshing explosion of flavor. Neon lights and vibrant Cuban art make you forget the hustle and bustle of the outside world as your cares quickly melt away in this Caribbean paradise.
One of the best things about both Seviche and Sonoma Grille is that they offer one of the best happy hours you’ll find in all of downtown Pittsburgh. Each weeknight from 5-7 p.m., and Saturdays from 6-8 p.m., you can enjoy $5 tapas, $5 signature cocktails, $4 glasses of wine, and $3 beers. Talk about happy hour harmony!

Enjoy the Filet Mignon Crostini, made with Dijon aioli, sweet and sour onion marmalade, roasted tomato, and Bear Flag dry jack. Tempt yourself with their Ahi Tuna Tartare, made with white truffle and wasabi mayo, fried sesame bread.
Both also offer great happy hour drink specials like $3 Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Yuengling, and Miller Lite; $4 Blossom Hill Cabernet, Salmon Creek Pinot Noir, and Painted Hill Pinot Grigio; and $5 cocktails like their unforgettable Sonomapolitan, California Limeade, and Flower Power Martini.
