SUMMER 2010   Pittsburgh's Best Resource for Home Design and Lifestyle Needs.

SUMMER LIFESTYLES

If you are one of those who find hot air balloons fascinating, you've probably dreamt of going for a balloon ride, or maybe even piloting one.

Did you know it’s relatively easy to get involved in ballooning? Getting involved can be as simple as following a balloon and meeting it at its landing spot. There are lots of other ways to get involved, a few of which we explain here:

Buy a balloon ride

Buying a balloon ride for yourself is often the most direct way of learning about the sport. Ask if you can help with the inflation and deflation of the balloon – most passengers enjoy helping which maximizes your experience.

There are lots of companies who offer balloon rides. The flight lasts generally an hour, and you should plan to spend about

3-4 hours for the entire adventure. Flights will take place near dawn and dusk since that's when the wind is the calmest.

Call a Local Pilot

If there are any local hot air balloon pilots in your area, give them a call and tell them you are interested in crewing. Most balloon pilots are very happy to accept new crew people. You’ll help with all aspects of the flight, and will ride in the chase vehicle as it follows the balloon during flight.

Don’t expect to fly, as this very important job will keep you grounded. Your efforts will be appreciated and you'll learn all about balloon flight quickly.

Go to a Festival

Balloon Festivals are a popular place to watch balloons fly. There are hundreds of balloon festivals around the world each year, with the majority occurring in the summer or fall. Some festivals allow spectators to walk amongst the balloons, while others may keep spectators away from the pilots and crews.

If you go to a festival, don’t be shy – balloonists are happyto answer your questions, and its possible you’ll find a balloonist that lives near you.

Get Involved!

No matter which way you decide to get in to ballooning, you’re sure to fall in love with the sport. Its unique draw makes it attractive to all ages. It is certainly a great conversation starter at a party, club, PTA or coffee shop. It’s a great first date, for youth, outing for families or travel adventure for retirees.

You’ll meet everyone from minimum-wage workers to big corporate CEOs. The one thing they all have in common is their love the sport regardless of their place in life.

Sports Museum

You’re invited to a museum unlike any other. A place where you can enjoy the great works of Maz and Mario. Art and Arnie. Roberto and Franco. Suzie and Swin.

A place where you can relive the moments that made them great. The Immaculate Reception. The Home Run. Olympic gold. Super Bowls. Stanley Cups.

The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum, a state-of-the-art museum at the Senator John Heinz History Center, captures the unforgettable and almost forgotten tales of Pittsburgh sports through hundreds of artifacts, more than 70 hands-on interactive exhibits, and 20 audio-visual programs.

When it comes to sports pride and sports history, no other region in the world is like Western Pennsylvania. So, it is fitting that we would gather at a special place to honor, relive, and enjoy our sports heritage.

Come be part of the action – and celebrate Pittsburgh sports pride.

Satan’s Camaro

July 17 – August 14, 2009

Presented by: Trust Education and

Community Engagement Department

Satan’s Camaro is a tag team effort between artists Justin Strom and Lenore Thomas. The goal of our collaboration is to approach and create artwork in a way that is outside of our individual work. Collaboration requires all parties involved to see things in new ways, to both compromise and push the bounds of the creators and the artwork. The pieces we create combine our individual ideas and aesthetics to make work that at its most basic involves opposites. The work also reflects our interest to create characters out of the machines and the drips and to force them into a relationship with each other. The colorful drips are like parasites sometimes living symbiotically with the machines they inhabit and at other times taking over their host. There is a narrative created that may be pleasant on the surface but underneath infestations of larva are uncomfortably wriggling around. In one sentence our current work is Slayer meets Stereolab, Halo meets Super Mario Brothers, and Skeletor meets My Little Pony.
